chain of thorns spoiler!
anyone else thought it was annoying how much cassie dragged out the whole “cordelia ran” thing. i loved how the last line of CHOT & the last line of CHOI mirrored each other but all the other times it was just overdone & forced

more asks - no spoilers!
I honestly found chain of thorn to be quite bad on many levels (ooc characters, random rushed plots w conveniences, no mentioning or [redacted], etc) and that’s already after TLH has been my least favorite shadowhunters series. I’m honestly concerned that TWP is also going to turn out to be bad which is a shame bc I’m so excited for it :( maybe I just put TID on too high of a pedestal so none of the other series compare lol. or maybe it’s just that whatever I think about these series in my mind/fanon just never works out in canon even though imo it should.
**SPOILER WARNING**
that's my thing about chain of thorns too. i actually really liked the premise of the plot and i thought the stakes were set high in an interesting way and had a lot of potential
but the fact that we have entire scenes just flat out omitted and characters who act nothing like themselves under the guise of "development" was just... so jarring?
you're going to maim one of gabrily's sons and kill the other and not once mention how they reacted or felt about it after the fact? we don't even get to see anna bring alex back to their parents or kit meeting up with them after explictly running halfway across london the moment he heard what happened
I, too, put TID on a high pedestal so i get where you're coming from. the plot of TID was mid at best but the characters just don't compare to any of the other tsc universe characters of any other series. character development was at the forefront of TID's plot while all the other series rely just on plot (or horniness, like TDA. don't get me started)
i do think sometimes this fandom had too many expectations of chain of thorns and expectations that fanon would become canon and that isn't entirely cc's fault because inherently fanon will never be canon because if it was, it would just be canon
but there were so many opportunites to make chain of thorns more emotional and invested and really highlight the stakes and it wasn't there. there's also no connection to any of the other series expect Malcom's anger about Annabel which would have worked well if we didn't get TDA before we got TLH, but we did, so that whole thing was dumb because we know how that worked out already
and don't ask me about the piss poor explanation behind the family tree i have blocked that from my conscious

do you ever think about how matthew fairchild was such a sunshine coded character—a golden boy, floated through school, charmed everyone with his infamous smile; a starry-eyed dreamer who had faith in most things that weren’t himself. and how because of one moment of naivety he lost years of his life to devastating self-sabotage, believing himself worth nothing, deserving of nothing, drinking day by day to numb out the pain—because he believed people could only ever like him when he wasn’t sober, when he wasn’t fully himself. and how despite visibly not being okay, nobody ever really said anything about it until he basically hit rock bottom. and do you ever think about how matthew would’ve given up his love for cordelia in a second if it meant james could be happy, when james wouldn’t do the same? you knew. i told you in the letter. and how he joked and deflected so much to hide how sad he really was, because he believed no one would care enough to see it. i did not know that i looked sad, to you. because i think about it a lot and it makes me very sad

Leo Valdez, contrary to popular belief formed by the fact that most people only see him around others when he's fighting for his life, does not use his fire all the time.
It's been Plan C since he was eight, afterall, the screams of his mother and crackling of kindling eternally echoing in his ears. It itches under his skin, rages through his veins, burns in his chest, it wants out, but he claws at it and buries it down, down, down where it cannot hurt anyone. Ivory bones under charred skin flash through his mind, flames devouring everything around–
He pulls his ratty blanket tighter around himself, shoving away the need to drive away the winter chill with his lifeblood. There are angry red marks down his arms, lacerations decorating his ribs, oozing blood, and he had been taught how to burn them, to force his skin to yield to flames, to use fire to heal, but he doesn't, because nothing that eats away at living flesh can be good — it's the Devil's power, afterall.
He uses it to save his friends, to save the world, because the damage it can do is smaller than if he doesn't. It tears him into pieces, skin flaking off and bones crumbling to ash, and that is his repentance, his purgatory, his Passion, his crucifixion for his own sins–
And then he's back and he binds his hands in gloves and cuffs imbued with the need to trap, to keep his simmering underneath his skin, to contain the fire in his bones and his bones only. He is not to burn anything ever again if he can help it.
Leo Valdez does not use his fire.

my biggest issue with chain of thorns is that we're told about some big/emotional events but we don't get to see them...
oh! will and tessa cried when they found out their kids were trapped in london! right after finding out their nephew died. but you won't get to read this scene
gabriel and cecily's son died! and they found out when his body was brought to them! but you won't get to read that scene!
will and tessa found out about the gracelet and were upset. but you won't get to read that.
charles confronted bridgestock and came out to the entire enclave in a very brave and dramatic way! but you won't get to read that!
like??? we had to suffer through 300 pages of a bullshit love triangle (i refuse to believe people honestly thought herondaisy won't be canon) but we couldn't get some genuinely important moments???

listen i wasn’t all the way off here because they did go to edom and stayed in a cave
what if the cave with the runes in edom we saw in city of heavenly fire was actually from the tlh gang all the way back in 1903?

more and more anon asks with redacted spoilers!
so unbelievably angry CC wrote a massive book and filled so much page time with an unnecessary love triangle and couldnt have included actually important scenes like [redacted]
she had 700 days to write this damn book and it read like a rough draft
**SPOILER WARNING**
i wish i didn't agree but i do. i really do agree
i am genuinely shocked that there was no on page jesse meeting his family. actually shocked. she really made it seem like we were about to get that scene each time someone said "we should also tell gabriel and gideon, sophie and cecily" and christopher saying "there's a family meeting at 10 we can't be late for" and then we just... don't hear about it again????
jesse went from having a family of two (and one of them being the most unhinged psychotic characters ever in literature) to having loads of cousins and aunts and uncles and we get zero of that. jesse doesn't even call any of them his cousin. we don't even get that much

charles being like “you guys don’t understand how hard it is to be me: a man who likes men” to a room that is filled exclusively with men who like men had the same energy as in tlbotw when tian said “do you know how hard it is to love someone you can’t be with?” to alec and jace of all people

My issues with chain of thorns aside, Thomas' come out was so fucking funny bc of how in character all the interactions were
Thomas, being the dramatic queen he is, simply decided to yell it out to his whole family without preamble and completely out of the blue that he's in love with a dude
Gideon ,our clueless sweetheart (bless his heart, he's trying), was like I wanna be supportive but I dont understand wtf is going on.you're in love? with carstairs? when did THAT happen? Help
Eugenia, another huge-ass dramatic queen, was like YALL HEARD HIM MOTHERFUCKERS,YOUR OPTIONS HERE ARE ACCEPTANCE OR ACCEPTANCE
And sophie, our always practical babe, was like enough chit chat all of you. When is son in law coming for dinner?

I’m just gonna say it…
Christopher Lightwood was the worst, the saddest, the hardest death to get through that Cassie has ever written.
More than Livvy or George Lovelace. Christopher was the closest to the main characters, if not a main character himself, part of a solid group and actually had a future laid out for him (his inventions, Grace) and it was stolen from him.
Christopher Lightwood deserved better. Ave Atque Vale, Kit.
(because no one in the book said it for you)
